GOYA - PICASSO: A CROSS-VIEW

As part of the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the death of Pablo Picasso (1881-1973), Goya in the Eye of Picasso offers a cross-reading of the work of the two great masters of Spanish art, and in particular looks at the influence that Goya (1746-1828) may have had on Picasso's production.

Although Pablo Picasso was born in Malaga in 1881, fifty-three years after the death of Francisco Goya (1746 - 1828) in Bordeaux, Picasso discovered the work of the Aragonese master at a very early age during a visit to the Prado Museum with his father in 1895. Only fourteen years old at the time, he was impressed by the power of Goya's paintings, and was himself nicknamed the "Little Goya" by his French artist friends. Throughout his life, Picasso looked at the works of the masters of Spanish painting - El Greco, Velázquez, Goya - and never ceased to be inspired by them. With Goya, he shared his fascination for bullfighting, his indignation at the cruelties of the world, his freedom of tone and creation, and a form of modernity.

Organised into three sequences, the exhibition presents a remarkable group of thirty-five works by the two artists, in a scenography that invites dialogue and a cross-viewing of light and shadow. Exceptional loans from the Musée national Picasso-Paris, the Musée du Louvre and the Bibliothèque nationale de France mean that works by Goya and Picasso can be seen in Castres for the first time.

Dedicated to Hispanic art, the Musée Goya is the only cultural institution in the Occitanie region to be associated with the Picasso Celebration in 2023. Following major renovation and extension work, the Goya Museum in Castres reopened its doors to the public on 15 April 2023. Following an opening exhibition dedicated to Joan Miró, this second exhibition devoted to Pablo Picasso expresses the Goya Museum's desire to focus on the great Spanish artists of the 20th century.

The Picasso Celebration 1973-2023 is structured around some fifty exhibitions and events to be held in renowned cultural institutions in Europe and North America, which together, through new interpretations and approaches, will provide an overview of studies and understanding of Picasso's work.
